“China too has become obsessed by Western style affluence. Fast cars, new apartments, smart restaurants, exotic holidays – this is the executive package now being sold in China. Of course, relatively few Chinese can afford such luxuries. There is still a vast gap between the few urban elite and the vast majority of the rural poor. Yet the logic of aspiration means that everyone is caught up by the same spirit of hope. It is not a question of what you can afford, so much as what you can dream about. Change is always precipitated by utopian dreaming.”
