“Franz Kafka writes about the Wall. In his terms, is a wall build on suspicion - a perceived threat from the north – whose role while purportedly being to keep out the other is in fact to bond those protected by it, and fan allegiance to the emperor. According to psychoanalytic theory, at any rate, every nation is founded upon a perceived threat. A nation needs a sense of the other in order to achieve a sense of the self. The wall act as a physical manifestation of a social order, serving to reinforce that condition. The wall may lend a sense of identity to what is enclosed within its boundaries, while engendering a sense of alterity towards what is outside. The wall creates a sense of exclusion which is both social and physical”
