“The more soldiers you inspect in the Terracotta Army, the more their individual differences become apparent. Does, then, the Terracotta Army reveal not so much how individuals make up a totality , but rather how a totality is always composed of indivials? Is the secret of Chinese society not conformity to a standard model, but variation within the whole? The answer no doubt will be as elusive and enigmatic as the meaning of the Army itself. All we know for sure is that we should be cautious of any overly simplicistic Western understanding of Chinese Society. For beneath surface level impressions there may also be a secondary logic at play.”
