| Chinese tourist outnumber foreigners, by far, at all the landmarks across China. As the barriers to travel abroad are being relaxed, mainlanders are arriving in droves in Rome, Paris, London, to the great joy of the tourism industry in Europe. Estimates forecast 25% increase per year in Chinese outbound tourism. Our mental image of the Japanese taking photographs in our piazzas will soon be replaced by the Chinese screaming of excitement. Their behavior, trust me, will not look familiar. I wonder whether these new encounters will help our understanding of the Chinese or will just reinforce our stereotypes. |
